Press release: Interlex to develop the national Translation Gateway project

12. December 2022

The Translation Gateway project is commissioned and owned by the Institute of the Estonian Language. The first phase of the project will last ten months. Under the terms of the procurement contract signed in mid-November, the first development phase of Translation Gateway will include the establishment of a translation order management platform and a translation tool for users, interfaced with the Mtee machine translation system (https://tolkevarav.eki.ee/) and the Ekilex dictionary and term-base system.

The goal of the first phase of development is an MVP. The longer-term goal is to develop a platform that brings together public sector translation memories and various language technology applications that support translation, such as speech recognition, text summarisation and simplification.

The need for such a central translation platform has long been recognised by public sector translation buyers and translation departments. Thanks to the initiative of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications, the Ministry of Justice, and the Ministry of Education and Research, this is finally happening.

As an expert in the field of translation, Interlex leads the development project, with limited involvement in product development. Singleton manages product development from prototyping, design and system architecture to a functioning MVP solution.

Inge Rätsep, CEO of Interlex, adds: ‘For Interlex, this project is the key to realising our vision for the future. In the coming years, we want to grow from a traditional translation service provider to a creator of translation solutions. We have cooperated with Singleton in the past and believe that the project offers a lot of opportunities for development for all parties involved.’

The limited-use platform of Translation Gateway will be ready for use for the national authorities participating in the pilot project in autumn 2023. According to the client’s vision, Translation Gateway could be available to all users free of charge in the distant future.

Interlex is one of the largest translation agencies in Estonia and has been active in the market since 1997.

Singleton has been in business since 2015 – a creative, innovative, and fast-paced software development company.

The project is supported by the European Regional Development Fund.
